Meet Rob

Who is Rob Guthrie — and why is he running for Town Council?

Rob’s story is a string of commitments kept — to his troop, to the people he led, to his family, and now to Hilton Head Island.

Where it started

It began early in life, with his Eagle Scout project.

As a teenager, Rob earned the rank of Eagle Scout. For his service project, he collected more than two tons of non-perishable food and clothing for Native American families living in isolated areas of the United States.

More than an accomplishment, that experience helped shape the values that have guided Rob ever since.

Serve others. Accept responsibility. Keep your word. Leave things better than you found them.

After college, Rob served in Southern California law enforcement for three years before building a career in entertainment and hospitality. Over several decades he advanced to a director role overseeing more than 800 employees and an annual budget of over $150 million.

But Rob’s definition of leadership has never been limited to a job title. At 50 he returned to college for his bachelor’s degree in business, graduating Magna Cum Laude from Thomas More University, and earned his MBA from Slippery Rock University in 2015.

When there was a need

Rob’s instinct has always been simple: find a way to help.

  • Coached Little League baseball
  • Helped establish a new Boy Scout troop
  • Served as Cookie Chairperson for his daughter’s Girl Scout troop
  • Organized blood drives
  • Stepped forward to help coworkers and families facing difficult times
  • Small-business owner alongside his wife, Pam, here on the island
Finding home

Hilton Head isn’t just where the Guthries live. It’s where the family put down roots.

Rob met his wife, Pam, in 2009, and they married that same year. Pam had been a longtime visitor to Hilton Head Island and introduced Rob to the place she had grown to love. They bought their first home here in 2014, and in early 2021 they made the island their permanent home.

Together they have six children and nine grandchildren — three of their children and several of the grandchildren now live here too. Pam is a lifelong educator who spent many years teaching middle school in Oxford, Ohio, with degrees from Ohio University and Miami University.

Today Rob and Pam are small-business owners. They understand firsthand that a healthy local economy matters to everyone — families, employees, business owners and retirees alike — and that economic strength and quality of life should work together, not against one another.

Why Rob is running

Because Hilton Head Island is worth protecting — and worth improving.

Rob isn’t running to change Hilton Head into something it isn’t. He’s running because we have a responsibility to protect what generations before us created, while preparing responsibly for the generations who will follow.

That means preserving the character, beauty and quality of life that make this island special. It also means being willing to confront the challenges that come with growth, listen to different perspectives, and make difficult decisions when they are necessary. Rob brings decades of experience leading people, managing organizations and solving complex problems — but the most important lesson he has learned is that good decisions begin with listening.

  1. 01

    Listen

Residents get heard before decisions get made, not after.

  2. 02

    Understand

Facts first. Read the studies, ask the follow-up questions.

  3. 03

    Work together

Find common ground where it exists, respect the difference where it doesn’t.

  4. 04

    Solve problems

Practical solutions, explained in plain language.

His pledge

Work hard, listen carefully, meet the moment, and leave Hilton Head Island better than he found it.

Preserve the Past — Improve the Future

We all have a vested interest in the quality of life here on Hilton Head Island. Help Rob protect it — not just for those of us here today, but for the families who will call this island home tomorrow.
